Contact dermatitis is a form of skin inflammation or itchy rashes, which is caused by direct or indirect skin contact with something in a person’s environment. It can be a result of an allergy reaction to contact with cosmetics, fragrances, jewelry and plants (allergic contact dermatitis); or an irritant reaction to substances like detergents, chemicals and hot water (irritant contact dermatitis). It isn't contagious, but it can be very uncomfortable.
Once you identify and avoid the cause of your reaction; and with suitable treatment the rash then often clears up in 2 to 4 weeks.
Symptoms
Itching of the skin is common and can be intense. Sometimes the skin becomes sore with blister formation. The rashes may be severe and weepy. If it affects the hands, hand function may be impaired due to the development of painful fissuring and cracking.

Treatments
Irritant reactions can be diagnosed after our dermatologists identify offending agents that you were exposed to at work or at home. However, for allergic contact dermatitis, patch testing (a form of skin testing) may be required to elucidate the cause. We will advise on what to avoid, products to use and we treat the rash with steroid creams and ointments to soothe the skin. In more severe cases, oral medications may be required.
